This article explores and identifies a ḥadīth discourse of revival, based on a famous ḥadīth and its commentary that promises renewal at the head of every century. Using an inter-textual analysis, it argues that revival was rooted in the first crisis faced by the early Muslim community when the Prophet died and could no longer personally guide Muslims. Across time and place, the discourse of revival confronts this original crisis by naming and renaming it, and offering a resolution. I also suggest that the first crisis was beyond resolution, as according to Muslim belief the prophetic line of succession ended with Muhammad. The discourse of revival thus became potentially recurrent, as resolution was always prone to disruption. =591 \\$dA1$hMuut humanistiset tieteet$i616$5ARTO =593 \\$ajufo:3$5ARTO =598 \\$aPeri2015 ; B$5ARTO =650 \7$ahadith$2yso/fin$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p22655 =650 \7$ahadith$2yso/swe$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p22655 =650 \7$aintertekstuaalisuus$2yso/fin$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p17213 =650 \7$aintertextualitet$2yso/swe$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p17213 =650 \7$aislam$2yso/fin$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p2082 =650 \7$aislam$2yso/swe$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p2082 =650 \7$aislamilainen kirjallisuus$2yso/fin$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p26634 =650 \7$aislamisk litteratur$2yso/swe$0http://www.yso.fi/onto/yso/p26634 =773 0\$7nnas$w(FI-MELINDA)000066222$w(FI-Arto)1386360$tTemenos :$x0497-1817. -$dHelsinki : Suomen uskontotieteellinen seura : Akateeminen kirjakauppa [jakaja]. -$g50 (2014) : 2, s. 257-271$sTemenos (Print) =773 0\$7nnas$w(FI-MELINDA)007003825$w(FI-Arto)1609607$tTemenos - Nordic Journal of Comparative Religion. -$dthe Finnish Society for the Study of Religion. -$x2342-7256. -$g50 (2014) : 2, s. 257-271$sTemenos (Online) =850 \\$aFI-S$5ARTO =856 40$uhttps://doi.org/10.33356/temenos.48462 =960 \\$aARTO =995 \\$aKansalliskirjasto$bARTIVA$bPeri$bJournal.fi$5ARTO
