O filósofo e autor de Breakfast with Socrates (2009) propõe, no seu mais recente livro, uma teoria radical de análise poética a que dá o nome de Criticismo Total, defendendo o regresso dos estudos literários ao texto. Identificando na poesia europeia recente uma "identidade moderna", este trabalho aponta as insuficiências metodológicas do Criticismo Prático e da Teoria, propondo um novo método de "close reading" e abordagem analítica àquela identidade.
