=520  3\$aTheophylact Simocatta, devoted a large digression in his "History" to the various theories existing at this time about the origin of the annual flood of the Nile river. While critically refuting most of them, he agreed with the theory of Agatharcides of Cnide, a geographer of the second century B.C. whose work is largely lost. According to Agatharchides the flood of the Nile was due to the early summer rains on the Ethiopian plateau, and this is in fact the correct answer. The present paper is a critical presentation and examination of these theories, as reported by Theophylact Simocatta.
