Semiotically, such a theory asserts that every act of signification contains an element of power. Dominant/dominated are two subject positions which determine both langue/parole and signifiée/signified relationships. Usually the dominated has to adopt the langue set by the dominant, but he/she can also try to produce new signifiers that radically change the situation.
