=520  3\$aIn this article I first describe a topic discussed by Mexican intellectuals in the mid-twentieth century: the being of the Mexican. In particular, I focus my interest on a group of philosophers known as the Hyperion Group, who subjected their subject of study to the rigor of two intellectual disciplines that were very much in vogue in those years: the Marxist analysis of society and the Freudian psychological analysis. Second, and from what has been explained there, I take the central figure of the drama El gesticulador, to analyse in the behaviors of professor César Rubio what the philosophers of the Hiperión Group said about the being of the Mexican and that said professor fully embodies. I focus my interest on the social, historical, political and psychological aspects that determine the behavior of Rodolfo Usigli's character.
