Due to its truncated character and enigmatic development, the ballad «Yo me estando en Tordesillas» has turned out to be something of a riddle ever since the publication of Duran's ballad collection since it was impossible to identify the «reina de Castilla, infanta de Portugal» who arrived at Coimbra, couldn´t enter the city, and took refuge in a monastery «que estaba en el arrabal». An analysis of the Castilian-Portuguese war of succession of Fernando I easily establishes it as an episode in the conflict, namely, the failed attack on Coimbra in 1384. We know from the chronicles of Ayala that Beatriz, heiress of the kingdom of Portugal, accompanied her husband Juan I of Castile, who claimed the Portuguese crown: and that in February of 1384 Coimbra closed its gates to Beatriz and Juan, and that they sought protection in the Monastery of Santa Clara, Coimbra, on the outsk irts of the city.
