This paper seeks to examine theinitiatives for the promotion of literacy skillsamongst undergraduate university students undertakenby the University of Cádiz in recentyears (2012-2017). It also looks to highlight theneed to establish the appropriate mechanismsto ensure optimal development of reading andwriting skills at higher education levels. Thedata analyzed correspond to the initiativescarried out by the University of Cadiz in threedifferent areas: their insertion into curricularplans, either directly or indirectly, the developmentof teaching innovation activities, and theimplementation of external activities developedby different university units. Knowing indetail the initiatives implemented so far is basicto designing future strategies since it is necessaryto know the current role of literacy educationat university. Likewise, it is important toknow the way in which these skills are taughtat university or the complementary activitiesassociated with it.
