The striking variety of tones and genres in Lope de Vega's writing articulates the symbolic values of his Madrilenian Parnassus: from the lyrical identification with the Manzanares river as bucolic motif to the parody of that same bucolism, and from the critique of the court as Babylon to the patriotic pride about the cultural centrality of the Spanish Habsburgs' court. This article focuses on a constant of Lope's writing: his desire to associate his trajectory to the construction of his own identity as linked to the symbolism of the city of Madrid, both court and capital, thus leading to his self-placement in the canon.
