The primise for this is the well-known intimate interplay between the vocal ane the instrumental in the music of Bach, and is in consequence relatively dependable in that respect. The worth of the results of the investigation is directly dependent on in which degree the correspondencies can be shown to be each others' counterparts. A clear case of such a correspondency is, for instance, the similarity of the Whitsun chorale Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist to the E major fugue. If on the other hand there exists a large number of original vocal forms (as for instance in the case of the D minor fugue) the assumption must be of a basic melos of that tonality and the method yields less valuable results. In addition, the relationship of the composer's melodic style to the basic formulae of his age is problematic. - In his summary, Tolonen presents the idea of an inner overall chain of chorales in Das wohltemperierte Klavier, based on the contests and order of the chorales. This question must be regarded against the general spiritual background of the age, and since the religious world played an essential part in it, too far-reaching conclusions are dangerous. Bach's religiosity has too easily been made into a theology. An interesting contrast to the results of this tendency is the political view on Bach of Marxist research. The most many-sided view ensues in this as in other cases from a synthesis. |
