The study of subjectivity and emotions in Romance poetry has been the subject of considerable developments over the last years, but exclusively as far as love poems are concerned; on the contrary, what I here define as «realistic poetry»-that is, poetry which deals with all those aspects of reality that do not imply courtly love- has never been the focus of such studies. This article focuses on the Provençal and Italian lyric traditions and offers some considerations on the relationship between the poet's subjectivity and the literary themes that are involved in the description of reality, where two phenomena can be observed: on the one hand, several new semantic fields are included in the lexical repertory of lyric poetry, while, on the other hand, some semantic fields of traditional love poetry can be re-used in a novel way.
