Although there are six modern editions of Fernán Pérez de Guzmán's Doctrina que dieron a Sara, we consider it necessary to carry out a new critical edition which would take into account all the extant witnesses, that is, eight manuscripts and two printed texts. Late in his lifetime, around 1454, the Lord of Batres wrote this brief educational treatise, which can be considered the first Castilian "mirror for princesses", addressed to women who were going to get married. In it, the five rules or pieces of advice given to Sara by her parents before her wedding were glossed in the manner of cancioneros.
