                            [a] => This paper examines in what ways the character of the gracioso exhibits metadramatic elements and how these develop throughout the seventeenth century. Basing the analysis on six representative examples which belong to different genres of the comedia, created by three different authors from distinct periods, and taking into consideration Karin Vieweg-Marks's (1989) analytical categories of metatheatre, we will highlight three metadramatic functions of the gracioso: observer of the action, a distancing with regards to himself and the directing of the plot. Five of the analytical categories will help illustrate these three functions: the first can be regarded as an observing gracioso, the second as discursive and intertextual, and the third as figural, fictional and "epicizing". We will see how the gracioso increases his distance from the dramatic illusion and thus approaches the reality of the spectatorʼs world.
