In this essay, the Cervantine comedia El gallardo español will be analyzed, focusing on the relationship between the actor-character and the spectator. Through the dramatic devices, among them the aside, monologue, soliloquy, and metatheater, the actors communicate with the audience. In El gallardo español, these dramatic devices create a mediating and communicative space between the actor and the spectator: they shorten the distance, or break the "fourth wall", between the actor and the spectator, and they create a more open ambience in the play, forcing the spectator to feel as if he were a captive in the dramatic world.
