Among William Shakespeare's poetic production, full of classical references, the Sonnets are the unique work in which the author (or his poetic self) expresses himself and his feelings in a personal way. In the Sonnets, he chooses this prestigious poetic form and connects directly with previous literary traditions, as he recognises, "dressing old words new". This paper reviews the researchers' contributions to a complex issue: the extent of Shakespeare's classical knowledge. Based on this theoretical review, our aim is to focus on the persistence of literary topics relating to three subjects - love, the passage of Time and the achievement of immortality through poetry - and to showcase the reception of Catullus, Horace and Ovid, Shakespeare's favourite poet, in some of the sonnets.
