Several legends published in the 19th century Spanish press are translations or adaptations of legends published in books and French newspapers, which in turn are translations of German legends. The sources refer to characters and events from the Middle Ages, although they were reinterpreted first in the Renaissance and later in the Romantic period. Some of their iconographic versions are also analysed. Keywords:Legend, Middle Ages, Romanticism, orality, Friedrich Schiller, Alexandre Dumas, translation, romantic painting.
