                            [a] => What follows is a study of "Consulta crítica", one of Leopoldo Alas' pieces for the periodical Madrid Cómico in 1884, also the year in which the first volume of La Regenta appeared. The piece includes a long poem in blank verse in "Limousin of Cheste", an ironic reference to the language used by the Count of Cheste, president of the Spanish Royal Academy [RAE] and translator of Dante. After examining the journalistic and artistic context of the magazine (Ramón Cilla, Sinesio Delgado, Martínez Villergas...), the 67 lines of the poem are edited and annotated. The meaning of "Limousin" and L. Alas' use of the word is discussed with the help of his own texts from other works, and is related to Cheste's reviled version of the Divine Comedy and to contemporary criticisms of the RAE. Cheste was supported by the Marquis of Molins, while Leopoldo Alas, Salvador María Granes and Antonio de Valbuena considered him a "Danticide". Juan Valera, an exceptional observer of the critical scene, attempted to create (through his relationship with Menéndez y Pelayo) a common front that would include Clarín. The poem "Consulta crítica", which is secretly related to La Regenta, is a virtuoso display of parody which is a highly burlesque version of the "scholars' language" heard in Golden Age theatre and still present in the "género chico" and Valle-Inclán.
