                            [a] => The authorship of the Coplas a la Veronica was thoroughly muddied by none other than the usually reliable Cancionero de Oñate. This poem, which otherwise is reliably attributed to Fray Íñigo, is unreservedly placed in the Montesino camp not only by a rubric but by a possibly apocryphal copla. One has to acknowledge that these satirical attacks by both Fray Íñigo and Montesino indicate that the target audience was the noble court and especially the royal court. Originally the diffusion of this type of poetry in the manuscript cancioneros was part of a programme of legitimising the new queen and her reign after the long civil war.
