This paper concerns the evolution and possible changes happened in the late Roman army between the 4th century and the beginning of the 6th century, especially related to certain corps of key significance in Republican and High Empire times: the heavy infantry. Alterations undergone by the roman legions after the military anarchy will be observed and the weakness of the Roman infantry in certain times and places of the Empire will be put in context, tied to the late cavalry and its new dominance role in the overall Roman strategy.
