All along the 19th centuy Alexandria becomes an important port in the Mediterranean from where cotton was sent to Europe and in a strategic center for the communications with Asia and Pacific through Suez, that was specially important for the Spaniards as made the passage to the Philippines faster. The Spanish observers will give notices of the changes in a city that kept rest of its past marked by the presence of Alexander, Cleopatra, Caesar, Marcus Antonius and Octavius.
