In this article, Becquer's El Miserereis studied as an example of what was, at thattime, the 'romantic' conception of literature. With this aim, the writing of Gustavo AdolfoBécquer is first contextualized within its historicaltime: From 1854, when Bécquer, likemany other students with intellectual aspirations, moved to Madrid, until the arrival ofthe Glorious Revolution and subsequent SexenioDemocrático. These historical facts create thecultural environment and the social effervescencethat made possible the writing of theRhymes and Legends. This is also the time periodin which the "capital awareness" is developedaround the city of Madrid; as well as the periodin which Krausist professors of the CentralUniversity of Madrid -such as Sanz, Salmerón,Giner or Castro- together with the agitationof the bourgeoisie draw a political line whichclearly differs from that of Bécquer mentoredby González Bravo. This paper ends with an explanation of thelegend entitled "El Miserere", which is examinedinterwoven in the ideological coordinatesof Spanish Romanticism, such as the image ofAdam's Dream, the ideology of music in SpanishRomanticism and finally, the way in which-due to aesthetical reasons- this artisticmovement reframes our past to then buildupon it different present.
