This article describes an empirical study carried out in the frame of a major project (see footnote 1). It has been designed to contribute to research into interpreting quality by analysing the interrelationship between recipients' implicit theories and their evaluation of a simultaneous interpretation. Previous research on interpreting quality suggests that nonverbal aspects have an important impact on the evaluation of an interpreted product. Initiating a new perspective in interpreting quality research this study adapts tests to analyse implicit theories (IT) in Psychology. Research on IT has focused on the answer to questions such as what makes a success or failure in different domains. This study analyses the quality expectations of 95 users and 65 interpreter trainees as well as their evaluation of the same English -Spanish simultaneous interpretation rendered by a man and a woman. The results show trends indicating that the hypothesis regarding gender-related professionality has received empirical support.
