This essay proposes to analyse how dialogic elements, dialectic techniques, and moralizing reflections combine themselves in Alcalá Yáñez y Ribera's most famous novel to narrate about a Cistercian monastery. In order to do it, the most remarkable aspects related to the protagonist in the picaresque setting, the importance of the conversations with a vicar, and the argumentation about ecclesiastic topics will be examined
