This article reviews the history of the archives that were born in the heat of the rebellion raised in Paraguay against the second governor of the Río de la Plata, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, in 1544. We will examine the logics of the gestation of these archives, the problems of their transfer and the different uses to which they were put in Spain, in order to highlight their articulation with some of the problems inherent in the complex relationship between writing and colonial rule at the dawn of the Modern Age
