In this paper we are dealing with Jhumpa Lahiri's In altre parole (2015)[In other words (2016)] as an example of literature of displacement or ectopic literature in which the rhetorical device of the metaphor is used as a preferential mode of expression. Paying heed to the concepts of ectopic literature and translational engine proposed by Tomás Albaladejo, we will examine the notions of linguistic exile and belonging and the manner in which they crystallize in Lahiri's work. The linguistic move implied by Lahiri's voluntary decision of translating herself into the Italian language in an autobiographical work which is full of metaphors, is scrutinized as the author's attempt to find a space or tóposto live and reside. Translational actions elucidate the connections that allow Lahiri's understanding of her writer status and her new sense of belonging to another language, that is, another tópos of residence.
