We study the first writings on diseases, medicinal herbs and ceremonies in Relación de las antigüedades de los indios, by the hermit Ramón Pané, which is regarded as the first ethnographic work of the Americas. Started in 1496 and finished between 1498 and 1450, the Relación is the first complete eyewitness report of the island of Hispaniola. Pané did not attempt to interpret what he saw; this makes the work the most objective, and the least westernized, account of the rites of the Taínos. Later, Mártir and, above all, Las Casas, drew on theobjective data provided by Pané to offer a subjective explanation of the rites and customs of the Taínos and sought Christian explanations for the existence of hallucinogenic herbs, or the appearance of plagues and diseases
