After the death of Isabella the Catholic, her daughter Joan becomes titular queen of Castile. The illness of the new sovereign causes her father, King Ferdinand, and her husband, Philip the Handsome, to clash over the government of the kingdom. The Italian humanist Pedro Mártir de Anglería, a witness to these events, narrates in detail in his letters the progress of the conflict between the two monarchs, portrays the protagonists and offers his opinions on this political crisis in which the Italian is a firm defender of the Ferdinand case
