De peste variolarum is a twelve elegy corpus in which jesuit Juan Ignacio Molina (1740-1829) describes in first person his experience as a smallpox sufferer, adressing with the different stages of the disease. The present article focuses on how the Chilean author, who, together with the patient's subjectivity, reflects his interest in medical knowledge, adapts the elegiac genre to his needs, incorporating elements from the canon and its models, but at the same time taking it through new channels that include his Creole condition, even bringing the text closer to the scientific field
