    Despite his importance to the first generation of cancionero poetry, the so-called poëtae veteres, the figure and work of the Archdeacon of Toro remain understudied. This paper aims to fill this gap with a view to determining both his debt to Galician-Portuguese lyrical verse and his innovative contributions to the new tradition of cancionero poetry. First, we examine available biographical data available and then add to it; we then analyse the six compositions whose authorship is well-established from a metrical, rhetorical, and thematic point of view. Finally, we provide an overall interpretation of the troubadour's complete output, starting from the hypothesis that the arrangement presented in the Cancionero de Baena encourages a sequential reading. Thus, the compositions that close the set (PN1-314, ID0533, a farewell song; its corresponding desfecha, PN1-315, ID1441; and PN1-316, ID1442, a humorous literary testament) offer the counterpart to the love cantigas (PN1-311, ID1438; PN1-312, ID1439; and PN1-313, ID1440), which are characterized by their conventional themes and their formal complexity. Our analysis suggests that the main innovation of the Archdeacon's work consists of proposing a new poetic experience (both thematic and formal) that transcends the framework inherited from courtly love. Such innovation needs to be considered against the background of the transformations that had been underway in French and Romance poetry since the thirteenth century.
