Nobility in Almansas Cartas: Noble Kinship and Power Strategies Much of the news contained in the series of 17 letters written by Almansa between 1621 and 1624 includes precise references to the family connections of the protagonists. This occurs particularly with families belonging to the nobility. From this information it would appear that the granting of strategic posts depended on membership of kinship networks, the power of whose members was highly influential. This can be seen very clearly in the case of the Counts of Olivares and Benavente. The letters also reveal the hereditary strategies that governed marriage alliances between very close members of the same family. The granting of Court honours and posts is also seen to be closely connec ted with family relationships. The news items also include the death of public figures, by reason of the legacies they implied and also, on occasion, the lawsuits to which they gave rise.
