The target of this article is to try to show that Herman Melville�s novel Billy Budd can be considered a forerunner of what years later will be known as harassment in the workplace, mobbing. In the work are described the characteristics of the bully, the limits of the laws to prevent those behaviours, and the responsibility of the organizations� managements in these cases.
