    Annotation:

The Apologetic Letter of the Franciscan friar Manuel Fernández Sidrón, written in 1735, is one of the many invectives issued against the Benedictine Benito Jerónimo Feijoo. In spite of having been written in Castilian, one of the features of this work is its frequent use of Latin quotations taken from authors dating from diverse times, beginning with those of classical Latinity. Such classical traces can also be perceived in the choice of some of the accounts dating from that period. In this sense, this essay studies the Apologetic Letter in its own historical context in order to demonstrate that the survival of Latin in the work is due not only to authorial erudition, but mainly to the persistence of the scholastic method. Some particular characteristics in the use of quotations are also assessed, as well as other data pointing to the possible sources the author may have had at his disposal in developing such an abundant body of texts.
