This paper studies the presence of the food theme in La Celestina, by insisting not only on its quantitative importance but also on its qualitative significance: it is one of the key elements to understand the social world of La Celestina since the relation to food defines to which of the social and cultural worlds depicted in the literary work a character belongs to. Besides, it is one of the ingredients of the prepicaresc writing since it is related to what the author of this paper calls the "hunger mentality". Finally, this study raises the issue of the relation of this theme with a certain hedonist vision of the world and the moral purpose of Rojas' work.
