Two theatre genealogies came up during the Spanish Civil War, according to different audiences and circumstances of stage. On one side, there were plays written and performed in the war front, with a extreme economy of means, which were characterized by a direct relationship with the war needs and a performative function on the audience. On the other side, a series of plays with bigger esthetical aspirations, played in the urban stages and which had as principal aim the canonization of foundational moments of the epic of the Spanish people, depicting an idealized image of the combatants. In this paper are presented the most important differences between these two spaces of dramatic production.
