                            [a] => This article reviews the works that have analyzed from different perspectives the formular system in the chansons de geste, emphasizing the methodology employed in each case. First, we focus on the examination of a number of general studies, i.e. that try to explain to a greater or lesser extent the reason for the presence of formulaic expressions and formulae in epic poems as well as their importance in the configuration and the aesthetics of these texts. Subsequently, we offer the analyses that have been developed on the formulae that are part of a particular motif and, also, those that are not assigned to any kind of motif.Finally, we deal with some aspects on formulism in epic poetry that critics have not undertaken or maybe they have done it with minor interest, pointing out the different difficulties that these analyses involve.
