The controversy between the Jesuits Evangelical Jose Ormaza («Pérez de Ledesma») and Valentín de Céspedes, centred on the bet for a modern preaching (Ormaza), free of evangelical loci, whys and in favour of the use of imaginary paintings, as opposed to a kind of sermon based on conservative and traditional norms (Céspedes), gave rise to a rosary of rhetoric, treaties and manuals adopting one or another position. This article analyzes the Arte de sermones para saber hacerlos y predicarlos (1677) of Bogota fray Martín de Velasco. Discusses his thought based on two keys: a) their models of preaching; b) his role as late link in the dispute between Ormaza and Céspedes from the following ideas: 1) the prologue to the reader; 2) essential parts and materials of the sermon; 3) the styles theory; 4) anti-ormaziana reprimand; 5) the actio; 6) judgements, loci and descriptions; 7) the conceptism; and 8) art of delight.
