    Annotation:

This paper seeks to explain the meaning and hilarity of a 'Pregunta' by João Rodrigues de Sá Luís de Meneses (Cancioneiro geral de Garcia de Resende) around an enigmatic courtly 'invenção'. This 'invention' apparently awoke the fertile, erudite, and playful imagination of Sá de Meneses, a poet and a humanist who satirized it as ambiguous or confusing, activating a homonymic game with three levels of meaning around the word 'atalante': the literal or common sense of 'atalante': the unbridled sexual desire of his friend, with his erected weapon ('clave non errante'), excessive passion that would lead him to poverty ('empty account'); the mythological / astronomical sense of Atlas, holding a sphere or navigational instrument that could not or should not err; the chivalrous sense of the Boyar/Ariosto Atlante, holding an object of divination or magic that also should not be wrong. The satirical strategy is therefore based on the ridiculous position of an element, when observed from a different significant series. According to this reading an editorial alteration to A. F Dias' edition seems appropriate, Atalante with a capital letter, with a note to clarify the homonymy of 'Atalante' with the common name 'atalante' (desire) and finally an extension or correction of the respective entries in Dias' Vocabulary of Cancioneiro geral.
