Phonetic studies undertaken within the AMPER (Atlas Multimedia de Prosodia del Espacio Románico) framework in the Canary Islands consistently reveal the co-existence of two interrogative patterns (circumflex and ascending patterns) in the smaller islands of the westernmost province (Santa Cruz de Tenerife). The circumflex pattern, which is more generic, links the islands to some Hispano-American languages such as the Cuban and the Venezuelan, whereas the ascending pattern is associated to the Castilian language. Following the methodology and guidelines developed under AMPER, we apply a perceptual test to 34 Canarian auditors, constituted by a number of 66 synthesized prosodic stimuli of declarative and interrogative sentences uttered by informants from the Canaries and from the Iberian Peninsula. The main objective is to gauge the degree of normality that auditors attribute to stimuli, in order to ascertain how representative each of the considered patterns is within the Canary Islands.
