From the origins of Pragmatics, its delimitation with respect to Semantics has been an issue for debate. The fact that both Semantics and Pragmatics are concerned with natural language meaning makes us consider their characterizations jointly, as a single problem. The constitution of Semantics and Pragmatics as branches of Linguistics after the appearance of several theories in those fields invalidated such .semiotic definitions as, for instance, Peirce's or Morris', and provoked what we can call territorial disputes. The aim of this paper is to study the roots of those disputes and to make a proposal for its eventual (di)solution.
