Although matricide has been widely addressed in Hispanic literature, the matricide that takes place in Elena Quiroga's novel La careta (The Mask, 1955) has not been analyzed to date. In this article, I examine the act of matricide carried out by the protagonist and narrator, Moisés, in relation to Melanie Klein' psychoanalytic theories, whose ideas have influenced feminism. My reading of matricide reveals how it reverses the male image and gives supremacy to the maternal subject, creating space for a female symbolic order. This interpretation of matricide questions the socio-symbolic organization in Spain during the immediate post-war period, based on an oppressive and patriarchal cultural system. The rebellious content in La careta is enhanced as it is written by a female writer who expresses herself through the erratic voice of Moisés, a subject of split personality detached from the social norm. Finally, this paper attempts to draw attention to works such as La careta that have gone unnoticed by literary criticism.
