                            [a] => This article studies the characteristics of a group of picture books whose central theme is death, intended for students in preschool and the early years of primary education. The article investigates the distinctive features of these works, considering whether they are appropriate tools for dealing with such a delicate subject in the early stages of education. To accomplish this, after a brief discussion of the subject of death in the literary tradition, it sets to establish a representative corpus of picture books published between 1985 and 2015, and analyze the texts and images that they contain. Through this analysis, it tries to demonstrate the most worthwhile techniques for representing death, and to classify the texts according to their tendency toward realism or symbolism.
