This article attempts to show that in the book Extrañeza de estar [Strangeness of Being] -written in 1944, the same year as the literary magazine Orígenes was launched-, by the Cuban poet Cintio Vitier (1921-2009), the search for a fusion between poetry and history is already greatly valued. It will also appear in later works by this prominent member of the origenista group, collected in Vísperas [Vespers], 1938-1953 (1953). Three decades before the triumph of the Cuban Revolution it is possible to see in this poetry a hunger for justice, a totalizing longing, a fusion of word and reality, an identification of the self with the other -what can be called popular insubordination. In this way, the essay refutes one of the most common critiques of Vitier's poetry: its division into stages related mechanically to the evolution of Cuban social reality from the second half of the twentieth century, whereas his early books are not considered to be dialogic, participatory poetry.
