Tato esej se zabývá hagiografií, hlavně pak vztahem mezi legendou a historií. Autor zde řeší otázku, zda vůbec mají legendy nějaký historický význam, proto se ohlíží zpátky do dějin, snaží se hagiografické texty rozdělit podle určitých kritérií a ke všemu dodává rozmanité příklady. Poté autor dochází k závěru, že "je sice třeba pečlivě odlišovat legendu od historie a fikci od faktu, ale stejně je třeba také neulpívat na historické kritice legend, nýbrž všímat si jejich analogického smyslu".
