Východiskem kritického zamyšlení je zjištění publikační nadprodukce, která souvisí s narůstající specializací oboru a s celkovým hledáním nového místa historiografie ve společnosti; souvisí ale i s postmodernistickým rozpojením vědy a informace do dvou sfér, jež mají své vnitřní zákonitosti a svou dynamiku: v postmoderním pojetí věda negeneruje "definitivní pravdy", nýbrž různá "nedefinitivní" pojetí a přístupy, jež vyvolávají množství publikovaných reakcí, polemik, rozvíjení, diskusí apod.; epistemologická skepse postmodernistů, podle níž minulost není to, na co lze "sáhnout", nýbrž to, k čemu se lze propracovat na základě interpretací, nachází u autora zastání a sympatie.
