| 520 | \ | \ | |a Abstract: Liszt's "Faust" concerto - a semantic analysis. |b The semantic or hermeneutical analysis of Liszt's E flat major piano concerto is based, firstly, on the deliberate deviations made by Liszt in regard to the traditional concerto form. Secondly, the syntactic analysis, which includes Schenkerian graphics, too, is complemented by recognising in this concerto semantic features, e.g. typical topics, conventions, characteristics and expressive modes of the time and by giving them Leitmotiv names. Thirdly, tempo and expression remarks (Aufführungsanweisungen) reveal the intentions of the composer. Finally, the possibility of naming the piece Liszt's "Faust" concerto, much in the same way as his B minor piano sonata has been succesfully interpreted as a "Faust" sonata in the wake of his "Faust" symphony, has been investigated. |
