The article studies the mise-en-scène of torture in the chilean series Los archivos del cardenal (2011) in the context of collective memory in present Chile. Torture as the most visible and therefore most "representable" sign in visual terms of the civil and military dictatorship is analized in relation to the concept of "truth" as the supposed motive of the act of torture. It then proceeds to analize the "truth" of the audiovisual representation of torture for the spectator. It claims that in the series, torture is represented as the "illness" itself of the dictatorial regime and not as the effect/symptom of a restructuring of the social body in political, economic and ideological terms.
