«Cultural and Historical Sense of the East: A Perspective from the Greek Heroes». Greeks perceived the unknown Eastern world in dissimilar ways. In a sense, with admired fascination, strangeness and exoticism, by the riches of the Oriental courts, the political ordering of their peoples and the prestige of their culture; on the other, with rejection and contempt, especially after the conflict with the Persians, who established the stereotype of the barbarian. The pages of Herodotus, but also of Pindar and Diodorus Siculus, Thucydides and Pausanias, serve as reference in the assessment of the Greek imagination on the East. A way to explain, understand and assimilatethe presence of Oriental people(Persians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Babylonians, Assyrians), with its cultural elements, away from the Greek area, consisted of the use of the genealogical scheme and the actions of some traditional mythical heroes.
