Enrique Vila-Matas (Barcelona, 1948) presents himself as a narrator who bets on the absence of formal borders; concision proves to be an essential conception throughout his entire work. Thus, in Recuerdos inventados and Chet Baker piensa en su arte we find a collection of diverse texts unified under the conception of a literary tale. These pages host his compendium of artistic influences: Musil, Sebald, Aira, Gombrowicz, Kafka, Beckett, Joyce, Duchamp, Perec, Bolaño, Piglia, Borges... paradigms which seem to be pursuing «the dictatorial laws of narrativity» in search of something better, something new, something «secret», a principle that aims to reconcile reality (and its chaotic language) with the vague, barbarian and silent flow of fiction.
