A modern reading of Persiles is proposed in both a symbolic as well as in a fictional way, according to Cervantes' renewal of the Byzantine novel, on the one hand, and the pilgrimage novel, on the other hand. The important relationship between the work El pelegrino curioso, from Villalba has been highlighted, due to its structure, thematic and stylistic coincidences. Here the protagonists travel for the pleasure of knowing and informing so as to also teach delighting. Likewise, the tragic sense of the work is updated, something which was already pointed out by Azorín as a fundamental element and corroborated by the text itself. The work constitutes at the same time a historical example of that first Baroque existentialism, and a perfectly up to date model to understand the human drama of any era.
