The poetical works of Onofre Almudéver find their context in Valencia about 1550-1570. In this paper I establish a list of old manuscripts and printed books transmitting his poems, both in Spanish and Catalan; in this paper I also and publish the poems together for the first time. This analysis allows us to understand what was already pointed out in some studies concerning Almudéver's involvement as author of several introductory texts printed by Joan de Arcos (Valencia, 1561) in three different but unitary books which included Jaume Roig's Espill and texts by other authors from Valencia. This compilation constitutes the origin and inspiration for what Ramon Miquel i Planas called Cançoner satíric valencià, a name which reinforced the historiographical label «Escola Valenciana», coined for the first time by Manuel Milà i Fontanals. Miquel i Planas saw great cultural relevance in the formal unity of the three books printed by Joan de Arcos, but he also developed a particular interpretation of the literary past which might have been inspired by some of the ideas outlined by Almudéver in his Epístola proemial. However, this epistle must be understood not so much as an effort to systematize a cultural period, but rather as a way to justify a specific editorial strategy, since Almudéver was involved in the book market but not in literary history. His creative spirit was mainly focused on devotion and pedagogy, as well as on the writing of proemial poems in praise of some authors and works published in his time.
