Economic globalization, industry 4.0, voluntary or enforced mobility and the contemporary tendency to use the Internet to communicate, are all trends welcomed by young people in one way or the other. These events and technologies bring people closer, but also generate mul- tiple perspectives that defy and contradict each other. They also intersect several so- cial, ethnic, linguistic, and identity variables that may come to in uence young people's life trajectories. Multiple case studies are used to focus on new participatory read- ing strategies that take advantage of web 2.0 and 3.0 connectivity. Special emphasis is given to reading materials and approaches, as well as to cultural literacy development, as tools needed to live contemporary lives. A new concept of 'young reader' is thereby created. This article intends to call the at- tention of educators to new ways of look- ing at reading; using it to understand and act in the world by focusing on the devel- opment of critical multicultural citizenship development.
